Step 1: Prepare the Oven
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Step 3: Cream Butter and Sugar
In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–4 minutes.
Step 4: Add Eggs
Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
Step 5: Prepare the Batter
Gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk. Stir in the hot coffee until the batter is smooth. Do not overmix.
Step 6: Bake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 7: Make the Strawberry Buttercream
Beat the butter until creamy.
Gradually add the powdered sugar.
Mix in the reduced strawberry puree, vanilla extract, heavy cream, and salt until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
Step 8: Assemble the Cake
Place one chocolate cake layer on a serving plate.
Spread an even layer of strawberry buttercream over the cake and arrange the sliced strawberries on top.
Place the second cake layer over the filling.
Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining buttercream.
Decorate with fresh strawberries, chocolate shavings, chocolate drizzle, and freeze-dried strawberry crumbs if desired.
